Every BI vendor sells this vision. Most organisations buy it. Almost all fail to achieve it.
The dashboards get built. The licences get paid. And six months later, everyone's back to emailing the analyst asking for a custom report.
Here's why self-service BI usually fails—and what actually works.
The Failure Pattern
You've probably seen this movie:
Month 1: Excitement. A new BI platform. Training sessions. Executive sponsorship. "This will change how we work."

For front-line staff: Embedded insights in operational tools. Not a separate BI platform—analytics built into CRM, ERP, or operational dashboards.
Curate, don't democratise
"Data democratisation" sounds progressive. In practice, it often creates chaos.
When everyone can build anything, you get:
- Multiple conflicting versions of the same metric
- Reports with subtle errors that go undetected
- Redundant work as different people solve the same problem
- Confusion about which report is "right"
Better approach: curate a library of validated, documented reports and dashboards. Let analysts build and validate. Then publish approved assets for broader consumption.

Making the Case for Investment
Self-service BI initiatives often fail because they're underfunded.
The tool licence gets approved. The data foundation work doesn't. The result is predictable failure.
Make the business case for foundation investment:
- Quantify the cost of bad decisions from lack of data
- Calculate analyst time spent on repetitive requests
- Estimate the value of faster decision-making
